I have ridden with the Yamaha Comfort Seat for a while now and I'm happy with it. My first one developed a split in the vinyl and my second one is now showing signs of death of the vinyl. Unfortunately, I haven't found a good solution for treating it to keep it from dying, as anything that prolongs the life of it makes it too slippery for me.

I'm not interested in any of the RDL's or Laam solutions, I'm really happy with the factory comfort seat, but it appears that they have changed it and I can't tell from the tiny internet photos what's different. Is it the fabric? Anyone know the difference between the old comfort seat part number and the new one?

It almost looks like they changed the fabric to be more like the stock seat, which I don't want (it's too grippy for my riding style) but I can't tell from the photos.

Have you removed the factory-installed Vibe-Rider? That may cause premature... Um...splitting.

Can you get it recovered? Places out there that do motorsport seats, boat seat cushions etc. They may have a selection of suitable covering material samples. You might be able to just get the material and DIY, if you are good with a sewing machine and stapler... Should be an easy job for a professional and cheaper than new. Especially since they can use the old cover as a pattern.

A little duct tape and you'll be good as new.

I'd do that but most places that do that kind of work around here want more to make 1 cover than the new seat costs.

Why no interest in RDL or Laam?

I've got a pretty cherry one I picked up from Lumberg if you're interested. I've gotten used to the Sargent, and the CS doesn't work as well for me.

The funny thing is, I think I bought my first one from Lumberg 6-7 years ago I'm not 100% positive but I think so. I don't think I was on this forum at the time.

If you or anyone else here wants a go at a DIY project, I have some good marine black fabric leftover from a seat that I recovered a few years ago. It came from a local upholstery shop that - in addition to automotive work - also does boat interiors. There is a full square of 37" x 29" plus a little extra (as you can see). Free to a good home. I'll split the shipping cost. I'm tired of storing it, but I'd hate to just throw it away.

I realize the FJR seat is more complex than a dirt bike, but I recovered my '97 KTM seat and it was actually easier that I thought it would be:

I have old & new Yamaha comfort seat sets. The new version is different. There is CF look material for side trim and what I would call a 'satin' finish vinyl w/o any grain or texture for seating surfaces. Not slick, not grippy and not at all like stock seat cover. I think it's just right.

After a few break in rides, the new comfort seat(s) are much more comfortable than original (gel) design. I like the look too! I also have a Laam set for multiple day extended trips. As the new comfort seat breaks in, the Laam might just go in a box. Time will tell...

The problem with the OEM seats, including the comfort seat, is there is a contour in the middle. I have modified several seats, remove cover, shave it at least flat with an angle grinder.... gel? Get rid of that and replace with foam? Anyway, once you flatten the contour (or even dish it slightly), just put the cover back on and staple it (air stapler almost a requirement).
Before you start shaving off foam, get a marker and put a line right down the middle, then one 90 degrees to it. Now put parallel lines an inch or so apart using whatever handy flexible ruler you have. Start shaving down the middle and work your way out the grid, which once removed, you'll see how uniformly you're doing it. It's easy, really. It will be better, but it won't be no RDL.
