Side Stand Removal

QUESTION: I tried to remove the side stand from my '03 to clean/paint it and I can't remove it. I removed the spring and the bolt but no go. It looks like there is a bushing running through it and the frame. Any suggestions form anyone that has already removed theirs? I thought it should slide off once the bolt is removed.
EDIT: I just checked the parts diagram and there is a collar in there. Now, how to remove it ???

Have never done it..... punch out the sleeve from the back side?

I have removed the whole thing by removing the bracket - side stand assembly just hanging by the wire which is the starting interlock. I have never tried to remove the stand itself from the bracket. Looks like you will need to punch out the collar as Ray suggests. Not enough detail in the parts fiche to say if it has to be from the back...

It seems like once the bolt washer and nut are out, the collar should push through. That is a pivot point for the stand.

Canadian FJR,
Scrub it clean with a soapy stiff brush, and rinse. Mask off the bike as needed, and paint it with a spray can.
Nobody will ever notice your sidestand.

A buddy needs to cut and weld his. Not comfortable doing it on the bike.

The local bike shop cut and welded my sidestand on the lowered bike. They cut off the foot, close to the floor, cut the leg down to size, and planted the leg on the (now separate) foot. With the bike parked on the level concrete floor, they attached the welder's ground lead
to the foot, not anywhere else, and welded the foot to the leg. With the foot set flat on the floor, the angle was perfect when welded. Added a shot of spray paint (not expected!) and it was a done deal, for US$ 12.

If the stand doesn't want to come apart at the pivot (stuck collar?), you can still remove the entire sidestand bracket. Then just have to disconnect the sidestand switch.
I liked what Red described two posts up - guarantees that the angle is right...

Fastpapy,
No, the shop said there was no need, due to the placement of the grounding lead
on the foot. Never had any problem in many such jobs. Now if somebody puts the grounding lead on the side-stand leg or on the bike itself, not on the foot, then I'd say all bets are off.

When in doubt, disconnect battery ground cable.
