The storm has passed leaving 3” of rain overnight.
The blueberry cobbler pan has been licked clean.
John and Festar ride again.
Luckily in the opposite direction of those clouds.

Tuesday 21 May 2024 - Altoona IA to Sioux Falls SD
300 miles today, 4150 miles since we left Spearfish SD on 11 May 2024

Image

We hung tight at Craig's until this large cell passed.

Image

Sirens were sounded for 70mph straight line winds, Craig got over an inch of rain in less than an hour. The cobbler was great!

Image
Craig picture

Lots of standing water in the fields as we worked our way North and West, watching the radar on the Garmin XT and trying to navigate around storm cells.

Image

Eventually we got caught and spent an hour sheltered in a little gas station in Smithland IA.

Image

A cup of coffee, A tube steak, and a soft serve cone filled our time while we revised our route to try and get around the storm cells coming from the South West.

Eventually we got on I-29 and headed North towards Sioux City IA. The wind behind the storm was incredible 35-45 mph with higher gusts was blowing us across lanes. About 1630 we reached Sioux Falls and a Super 8 Motel for the night.

Home for the weekend tomorrow!

New headlight for the BMW on Friday the moving element in the adaptive headlight system is rubbing on the inside of the plastic lens.

Sturgis BMW has one in hand for a Friday morning extended warranty repair.

Its a good thing we have experts like Don (and yourself) to suss that out. lol.

However, us grownups remember a non x-rated version of that noun that was commonly used in church going family circles even. Yall probably were born too late to get it.

Wednesday, 22 May 2024 - Sioux Falls SD to Spearfish SD
Today's Mileage - 417 Total Mileage since 11 May 2024 - 4567

Image

We humped I-90 before turning North to intersect SD 34 which we rode across most of the state on a beautiful almost wind free day.
It was 50f when we left Sioux Falls a bit brisk at 80 mph.

One can visualize how the early settlers could name the "Black Hills" the Black Hills, they were especially black this day.

I know I'm getting close when Bear Butte is in view.

50 degrees on a cloudless and windless day sounds delightful.

Likely just fine, the engine RPM is just a bit higher most of the time. Nice to see you guys weren't dodging thunderstorms.
Searching for roads paved with Asphalt, unless I am riding the mighty DR650 bushpig.

Bike goes really well up to 75-80 until you hit a headwind. But all in all it’s great.

He is good up till about 80-85 mph then it is panting.
I have to watch my acceleration or I really can get ahead in traffic.
Picking passing places takes a different frame of reference, it takes Brian a lot longer to "Get By".
