What did you do to your FJR today?

Most of us post after we ride the FJR. Can I post I plan to ride my FJR tomorrow? The plan is for a morning ride and mess with the ES suspension setting to try and find a better ride on rough county roads. I am not optimistic.

Was given the green light to ride 2 months after my fusion surgery! He originally told me it would be longer. I think those surgeons like to under promise and over deliver. About all I could do was cleaned it up during that time and now am ready to rock. 3 rides in just over a week, the last 250 miles. I will say that after that ride in all the twistiest places I was sore like after a hard workout. It does take a few good rides to get back in riding shape after going through a surgery and recovery like that. Man it feels good to be back out there and I really realized how good for my soul it is to ride after not being able to for awhile.

Good for you, it gets better. My surgeon was surprised that i was pain free and off my meds 1 month after my fusion surgery. My first longish day ride was 3 months after my surgery...500 mile day up to tech day in Owosso, MI. and back. The real test came 4 months after surgery, out to YFO in California and back...6600 miles in 13 days...no issues.

I said the heck with it and jumped on the FJR for a quick buzz up to Bloomington Illinois. Guy up there posted on ADVRIDER that he had a bunch of FJR items. The Main few things were a full quart of unopened whale Jizz from Yamaha for the final drive. Another quart of Yamaha lube oil, A bar end, a bunch of crush washer, and quite a few miscellaneous fasteners. A package of wind shield screws, and small screws that no one loc tites and they fall out.

He was going to pitch them since he no longer has the FJR. So I figured I could be a holding place in case someone needs these specific items in the future. I have certainly benefitted from the group here and if I get to a tech day soon, I know Ray and crew could always use some inventory.

My eye did fine and I got to ride some while saving the landfill from these items.

You did good. I just paid real money for a few rivets and bolts from motosport.com.

Plus the "in stock" parts were backordered and took a month to get here.

Ordering online is now an adventure.

I would be happy to ship someone any of the stuff I have accumulated. One bar end seems silly, but then again, they only fall over on one side at at time.

If someone needs some specific stuff, why are we ordering up on websites now? I know I have at least 100 small fasteners for FJRs at this point. I would be happy to ship someone any of the stuff I have accumulated. One bar end seems silly, but then again, they only fall over on one side at at time.

I tend to do stuff the hard way. Next time I will just call you.

Went for a 210 mile ride today in temps as high as 95° F today. It was a bit toasty but not terrible and beat sitting on my arse today waiting for cooler weather. Cooler weather will be here soon enough.

So the idea today was mess with the suspension to find a more supple ride on the uneven pavement with small irregularities I ride frequently. So I set the preload from 2 helmets to 1 helmet and set the damping to soft -2. I ended up with the best ride at 1 helmet and the damping set to normal 0. The best ride is defined not getting jostled around and having the shock soak up the small irregular bumps rather transferring them to me. In that regard I was successful, yet I wish the rear shock did a better job providing a supple ride and didn't give up performance.

The second reason to ride today was to find lakes suitable for kayaking. Recently the wife and I bought a small inflatable two person kayak for very casual floating fun. So I went to Williams Lake another finger lake in the scab lands just south of Spokane. The lakes were formed by the Ice Age Floods.

I went on to Rock Lake. Not quite as nice at least to blowup and launch the USS Lollipop.





The lake reconnaissance complete I went on to complete suspension testing. What was going to be a 2 hour ride went on to 5 hours. I also was testing the GPS having put in a different SD card, the former one was suspect and causing the GPS to crash. I store an Open Street map on the SD card as Open Street maps is more accurate than Garmin City Navigator when I am on my DR in the backcountry. That problem seemed resolved too.

The wheat fields are turning golden brown. Harvesting will start soon.



It was a nice day to be on the FJR.

Interested to see what those settings will be like on my ES. Thanks for the baseline. I will report back to what I had my settings on. Maybe great minds will think alike.

A month ago I put a new battery from amazon in my Garmin 660 that has served me ever so well over the years. The siren call from the new XT is strong, especially the easier to see graphics, but there has been JUST enough complaining about it to keep me safely in my 660 comfort zone. I have no desire to wire a new toy either. Well, twice over the weekend the garmin acted up. Didn't come on, then was dim. I was cursing myself for missing the latest XT sale. Yesterday when I got home I put in the old garmin battery and it fired right up and worked fine. Called the company on amazon and they are sending me a new battery, but I may just leave the old one in. It doesn't hold a charge like it used to, but since it's wired it really doesn't need to.

The 2nd replacement battery they sent to replace the faulty one is no better. Won't hold a charge and when newly charged quickly goes dead. Going back to the garmin original which still holds up pretty well, just not as well as when it was new. $20 wasted. That XT just got more expensive.

Went for a ride last night. My audiovox cruise control had been disengaging unexpectedly; I found a pinched wire and removed / repaired that section of the install last week. Test ride resulted in steady speed hold and normal engagement with no surprise disengagements (win!). Also field tested use of new amber / yellow tinted internal sun visor on my Neotec - also a win.

Not this time. We did that one time and there was something going on and we went through at a walking pace. It sucked and took forever. This time avoiding tourist areas...strictly farm country....so combines, a stray cow, an Amish buggy (and associated poop), and perhaps a meth head driver should be our only obstacles on Saturday.
